The Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) is the body charged with the responsibility of regulating the practice of librarianship in Nigeria. It was established by Decree 12 of 1995 by the Federal Government of Nigeria as a Parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education.

What does LRCN do?
LRCN is mandated to:
- Determine who librarians are
- Determine what standards of knowledge and skills are to be attained by persons seeking to become registered as librarians, and reviewing those standards from time to time
- Establish, secure and maintain a register of librarians in Nigeria
- Maintain discipline within the profession
Who can become a member?
Membership is available to Librarians, Information Scientists and Information Managers, Record Managers and Archivists, with a minimum of first degree or a master’s degree in Librarianship
What does it cost to register?
Pay N3,000.00 (three thousand naira only) non-refundable Processing Fee into the LRCN account at any branch of the following bank throughout the country. (Please note that this is NOT the Registration fee).

It can be downloaded from the Council’s website at www.lrcn.gov.ng and
• All Universities and Polytechnic libraries in States where they are available
• All State Library Boards
• National Library of Nigeria, Headquarters, Abuja and State branches
• National Universities Commission

Does the LRCN have Zonal Offices?

What are the differences between LRCN and NLA?
The LRCN is a Federal Government Parastatal established by Decree 12 of 1995 while the NLA is a Professional Association registered with CAC as an NGO.
What are the benefits of registering with the LRCN?
Your registration with LRCN is a necessary license for you to practice Librarianship in Nigeria.
Do I have to take an examination to be registered?
Presently, the LRCN does not conduct an examination for prospective applicants. However, examinations may be conducted in the future.
