What is LRCN?

LRCN is an acronym for Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria. The Council is charged with the responsibility of regulating the practice of librarianship in Nigeria. It was established by Act 12 of 1995 by the Federal Government of Nigeria as a Parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education.

Mission Statement
To pursue the attainment of professional excellence by determining who are librarians; the standard of knowledge and skills required for registration and practice; guidlines for accreditation and minimum standards for libraries, and maintainance of professional discipline among librarians.

Vision Statement
To be a world-class regulatory body that provides a platform for the delivery of quality library, and information service in Nigeria.

What does LRCN do?
LRCN is mandated to:

  • Determine who librarians are
  • Determine what standards of knowledge and skills are to be attained by persons seeking to be registered as librarians, and reviewing those standards from time to time
  • Establish, secure and maintain a register of librarians in Nigeria
  • Maintain discipline within the profession 

Who is a Certified Librarian?
A Certified Librarian is a graduate of Library and Information Science (first or second degree holder), registered and inducted by LRCN.

What does it cost to register?
Pay N5,000.00 (five thousand naira only) non-refundable Processing Fee into the LRCN account at any branch of First Bank of Nigeria in the country. (Please note that this is NOT the Registration fee).

After payment where can I obtain the LRCN Form?
It can be downloaded from the Council’s website: www.lrcn.gov.ng

Does the LRCN have Zonal Offices?
No

What is the difference between LRCN and NLA?
The LRCN is a Federal Government Parastatal established by Act 12 of 1995 while the NLA is a Professional Association registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) as a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO).

What are the benefits of registering with the LRCN?
Your registration with LRCN is a necessary license for you to practice Librarianship in Nigeria.

Do I have to take an examination to be registered?
Presently, the LRCN does not conduct an examination for prospective applicants. However, examinations may be conducted in future.

When will the Registration close?

Registration is a continuous process.
